Gestión de vertederos y economía circular

– “Use of innovative technologies to remediate and extend landfills’ life in response to islands unique needs in managing solid waste. The case of Ghallis landfill (Malta)”

Resumen: » Waste disposal is a global problem, but it has worrying connotations on islands due to their typical and unique ecosystem having a limited geographical and ecological capacity to dispose of the growing volume of waste.

The presentation will focus on the island of Malta, where Frisoli s.r.l. has been working on the remediation and vertical expansion of Ghallis’ landfill since 2019.It will demonstrate how using innovative technologies will significantly impact sustainability by giving landfills a role in a circular economy by completely changing their management and visual impact.

In response to the Maltese needs to increase landfill void space on the existing landfill cells, Frisoli’s project aims at completely transforming the landfill area thanks to a three-step approach:
• remediation and volumetric increase through a patented system that
uses differentiated waste as construction materials to build the reinforced
embankments,
• introduction of renewable energy sources,
• eventual bioremediation through vegetation planting.

Frisoli’s intervention will reduce the impact of SW on the island by ensuring sustainable landfill management and avoiding the necessity of identifying another landfill site on the island by extending the life of the existing one for several years.

Moreover, the project aims at preparing the landfill to be safely closed in the future, with the possibility of using the site as a source of renewable energy (solar, wind power). »
